About Junior Baseball
The Junior Baseball program consists of a spring season that runs from early March until just prior to the end of the school year; a short summer program; and tournament-level baseball opportunities during the spring and summer.
The program is divided into four age groups. Boys ages five (5) and six (6) play on Rookie teams (Coach Pitch). Boys seven (7) and eight (8) play on Midget teams (coach-pitch); those who are nine (9) or ten (10) play on Pee Wee teams; and those who are eleven (11) or twelve (12) play on Bronco teams. The playing fields are graduated in size so that every two years the boys move to slightly larger fields with greater pitching distances. Lighted Pee Wee and Bronco fields are located at Memorial Middle School (870 Attingham), Spring Woods Middle School (9701 Hammerly), and Spring Forest Middle School (14240 Memorial) while Midget games are played on four-field complexes at Pine Shadows Elementary School (lighted fields) (9810 Neuens) and at the SBISD Guthrie Center (10660 Hammerly).
The program draws boys from three geographical areas: Spring Branch, Memorial, and Westchester. The teams compete in as many divisions as the number of teams require, and there are playoffs at the end of the season. In the Rookie and Midget league, players are assigned to teams, with team formation typically following elementary school attendance zones, to the extent possible. Teams in the Pee Wee and Bronco leagues are formed by draft following skills evaluation. Players in the Pee Wee and Bronco leagues also are divided into leagues for players with greater skills (American League) and leagues for those with lesser skills and/or less experience (National League).
Tournament teams are formed at the end of the regular season in all age groups to compete in the PONY (Katy Freeway) baseball program.
