Football Sophomore League

SBMSA Football takes a conservative approach to significant change. We believe that most of our rules and policies work quite well for our community and we are mindful of the law of unintended consequences. So often, improving in one area creates problems in several others. So it is only after much study and discussion that the Football Board has decided to introduce a Sophomore Tackle Division for the 2010 season.

The purpose of this change is to improve competitiveness and participation for both 9 year olds and 10 year olds as well as to lessen the magnitude of moving from Freshman Tackle. We understand that, for some, it can be intimidating to consider sharing a field with 5th graders and a significant number of families elect to wait until 5th grade to play that first year of tackle.

If you are still 9 years old on July 31, you will play in the Sophomore Division. If you turn 10 before July 31 you will play in JV. Only for very special circumstances will players be allowed to move up from Sophomore. Team formation for Sophomore will follow the same procedures as JV. There will be a skills assessment and a draft.

Based on the registration numbers from the last three years, we expect to field 6-8 Sophomore teams and 8-10 JV teams. For you potential coaches with 9 year olds that were thinking about just being an assistant this season - we need you to step forward and take a team. What if we had a new division and no one came to coach it?

The Sophomore Division will be on a trial basis this season and evaluated for consideration as a permanent change going forward.

As always, your feedback is appreciated.

It's almost that time again!

Weigh-In Policy

JV and Varsity Players

Please note the following modifications to SBMSA Football's weigh-in policy effective for the 2010 season.

As has been done for the past several seasons, all players will be weighed at the Skills Assessment on Sunday, August 23rd. This will be an official weight.

JV players that weigh between 101 and 105 pounds will be allowed to re-weigh on Saturday, September 5th, in attempt to make the "ball-carrier" weight of 100 pounds. JV players weighing above 105 will not be allowed to re-weigh and their official playing weight will be recorded on August 23rd.

JV players weighing above 160 pounds will not be allowed to re-weigh and will be moved to the Varsity program. JV players weighing between 150 and 160 have the option to move up to Varsity or to come back for the re-weigh on September 5. However, those that elect to try and stay in JV, if they do not make the 150 pound or less weight, they will not be allowed to participate in the 2009 season as the Varsity program will already have formed their teams.

The Varsity program will be the same, although with higher weights. Varsity players weighing above 125 will not be able to re-weigh. All Varsity players above the 185 pound top weight will have the opportunity to come back on the September 5 date to try and make the 185 pound weight limit.

These modifications are made with the health of our players in mind as well as to honor the spirit of our weight limits.
