Spring Branch - Memorial Sports Association
About

Registration for SBMSA Basketball runs from October 1st through October 31st each year. Teams are formed in early November. Team formation in both the boys' and girls' programs is based on the players' age on Aug 1st of the current year. We group players according to age into four different age groups in both the boys' and girls' programs. These are ages 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10 for boys and girls; and 11 through 13 for boys and girls. The 11-13 boys are divided into two leagues based on grade.  We introduced a new subdivision in the Boys 11-13 league in 2015-16. We now have a Boys 7th/8th Grade league.  Lowered goals, smaller courts and smaller balls are used for the two younger age groups.

SBISD middle schools, high schools, Westchester Academy, and Spring Branch Education Center gyms are used for practice and games from mid-December to February. We have also been granted access into a few elementary school gyms for our youngest age groups to practice at their own school. Practices are on Sunday afternoons/evenings based on your team’s assigned practice time. There may also be practices during the week in the older age groups depending on your coach. All games are played on weeknights and Saturdays. Teams will usually have one game during the week and one game on Saturday.

Only a set amount of gym space is available for SBMSA use since gyms are also being used by the SBISD school teams. Player limits are often reached before registration closes; therefore, anyone registering after an age group has reached capacity will be placed on a waiting list. It is imperative that registration be completed as early as possible.

We have strict minimum playing time requirements, so each participant is assured of playing at least one and a half quarters each game. Please take a minute to review the Basketball Rules and Code of Conduct on the website for more specific information on our league.

All teams make the playoffs at the end of the season. We will form up to three playoff brackets per age level (Gold, Silver and Bronze), so evenly matched teams have an opportunity to make a championship game. Our older age levels typically play their championship games in Don Coleman Coliseum. We also have All-Star teams and a sportsmanship award that is given to one player on each team. Key characteristics for this award recipient include player attitude, improvement and skills development during the season, regular attendance to all practices and games, and generally exhibiting the highest level of sportsmanship on the team.
